Here we are looking west towards the opening of ’Whale Channel’ on the BC coast. As you head north out of McKay Breach, even on the ferry to Prince Rupert, just before you get to the village of Hartley Bay, off to your left is Whale Channel, which eventually leads to Hecate Strait. It is said that this channel was so named because whales used to come in to here to rest from the rigours of a stormy Hecate Strait especially whilst on their migration north or south depending on the time year. I’ve certainly seen a few whales in this channel in my time on the coast and on this particular evening even a pod of orca (below) came steaming past across the mouth of the channel so as not to leave us disappointed.
