Surprise, Surprise!

Wolf-on-a-Waterfall

This certainly was a surprise for me and those with me last week in the Khutzeymateen. It was mid-afternoon and we were waiting in our small zodiac for a male bear out on a grassy knoll to swim across the channel to the main shore – the tide was quickly swallowing his small stretch of land. A way off in the distance on the opposite far shore, a movement caught my eye and at first we thought it was a recently weaned grizzly cub that had come out of the bush. As we watched longer, we realised it was this lone wolf. We made our way over, fully expecting it to make off for the bush as it saw us approach, but it didn’t, it continued to make it’s way along the shoreline and across this small waterfall coming down the side of the mountain. It was a surprise for us and our guide to see a wolf out in this location, particularly at this time of day. Sometimes they may see two or three wolves a year, but usually in the early morning, not at 3.30pm!
