Recently I came across a coastal wolf that had found a seal carcass washed ashore, (it was thought the seal may have been hit by the prop of a passing crab boat). Whilst photographing the occurrence seemed a little gory – watching the wolf at work was a special treat. As can be seen in this shot, his stomach is a little full and distended from all the seal he had consumed, (having got their fill, wolves return to the pack and regurgitate food for their young). But what happened next amazed and amused me. The wolf began dragging the remains of the seal in to the bush, as it did so some pieces would fall off. Seeing their chance, crows would dash in and start to feed on the mislaid parts. Unhappy with this, the wolf would stop it’s work, chase the crows away, pick up the dropped piece of seal, take it back and place it on the carcass and then continue to drag it all away!
