White Admiral

White-Admiral

This striking butterfly is found across northern British Columbia, but is rarely seen in southern parts. The name, White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis) (L.a. rubrofasciata in BC) seems a bit of a misnomer as this form of butterfly is of course mostly black/brown with a thick white stripe running through it’s upper and lower wings. This guy was photographed during my spring road trip earlier this year and they can often be found between June and August with fewer numbers spotted in to September. This particular butterfly was sunning itself on gravel beside a lake when I happened across it, which I believe is something they like to do. They can often be found ‘sun bathing’ this way – on rocks or on a road surface rather than on plants, which many of us usually associate butterflies with.
