The common Rock Thrush(Monticola saxatilis) can be found in parts of Africa, across Asia and in Southern Europe and is sometimes also known as the rufous-tailed rock thrush. This bird here is either an immature, a non-breeding male or a female. I know that just about covers everything, but the breeding males can be quite striking in appearance with a slate blue head and neck, dark brown wings and a rusty, rufous colour down the chest and belly. This shot was taken in Tanzania which is just about the southern limit of their winter migration from Europe. Each spring they return to Southern Europe to nest and spend the summer, before returning south in to Africa again.
