Von der Decken’s Hornbill

Here we see a Von der Decken’s Hornbill (Tockus deckeni), which is one of over 60 species of hornbill across the world. This species is found mostly in East Africa between Ethiopia and Tanzania. This is a male on his way to the nest site to feed the female (females have all black bills). Nests are in an opening or cavity in a tree and once the eggs are laid, with the female inside, both sexes mud up and seal the entrance and whilst the female is incubating the eggs and looking after the newly hatched chicks, the male brings them food and removes the garbage through a small slit left in the top of the entrance. After about two months the females break out of the nest followed by the ready to fledge chicks soon after.
