Here, once again, we have a look at transient orca ‘T060C’ breaking the surface as he passes by a couple of family members off the Vancouver Island shoreline. Fortunately for lay-by observers like myself, this guy is a little easier to identify thanks to that little notch a third of the way down his dorsal fin. More experienced observers and researchers are able to identify individual orca not only by marks, notches and cuts but also by the patch at the base of their dorsal fins known as the ‘saddle patch’ and with many individuals by markings on their tails too.
