Take a close look at this big guy – he’s looking a bit battered and bruised, with a few scars and scratches. Nevertheless, regardless of his looks, he was fine and when we came across him he was making his way away from the Khutzeymateen estuary and doing his courting patrol along the inlet. Looking at the state of him, he’d probably lost out in a battle with a bigger male, most likely over a female, so had decided to try his luck elsewhere. This often happens in nature in general and one thing I’ve noticed with the bears in this area is that in a few days or so he’ll probably come back again to see if the bigger guy has moved on.
