
Here’s a ‘dreamy’ picture postcard type shot from the Khutzeymateen featuring a nice reflection of some flowering rosy paintbrush. We’ve seen these blooms before and they are a staple of the BC coast and can come in various colours – red, the most common, but also rosy as seen here and even some with yellow bracts. This variety is known by the full name of Olympic Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja parviflora var. olympica), but I think I prefer just ‘rosy paintbrush’ to keep it simple. The colourations seen on these plants aren’t actually formed on petals, like flowers, but on ‘bracts’ which are type of leaf that often helps to attract pollinators such as bees to the plant.
