Salt and Pepper Cormorant

We’ve featured several species of cormorant, such as the Brandt’s, pelagic and double-crested here on the blog and in the galleries, but for many of us, it’s hard to see much in a cormorant other than a large black seabird – and I was the same for a long time. However, as with many birds, come the mating season they can take on a whole new appearance and the Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is no exception. Come March/April time the males take on this impressive ‘salt & pepper’ look, ever hopeful it will aid in attracting a mate.
