Chanting Goshawks

Above we see a Dark-chanting Goshawk (Melierax Metabates) photographed whilst in Tanzania a couple of years back. This is one of two ‘chanting’ goshawks found in the region – the other (below) being the Eastern Chanting Goshawk (Melierax Poliopterus). Amongst other things they can be identified by the colour of the cere (the layer of skin between the bill and forehead), which is yellow in the Eastern chanting goshawk, whilst it’s an orangey red in the dark chanting goshawk. Unsurprisingly, these two spectacular sub-species of goshawk were named due to the sounds/calls they make, especially during the nesting season.
