River Otter Portrait

Here’s another shot I edited recently of the young otter I featured here a couple of years back. River otters are certainly playful little characters and I enjoy watching them when I can, but they are also rightly very skittish and shy. But, although they are mostly seen in water, they actually spend about two thirds of their time on land. They prefer to come ashore to eat once they have their catch and they do of course den and sleep on (under) land also. Equally, they will head to the water for safety if they feel threatened and they are subject to predation from larger mammals such as canines and bruins and even the odd eagle will try it’s luck, especially with younger otters.
