Gallot’s Lizard

The Gallot’s Lizard (Gallotia galloti), sometimes known as the ‘Tenerife lizard’ or ‘Canary’ lizard, is a reptile found only on the mid-Atlantic Canary Islands of Tenerife and La Palma. Except for mating (April to August) they are solitary creatures that will fight ferociously to keep or defend their territory. They are rather skittish and quite harmless and can often be spotted throughout the day looking for food around the volcanic rocky crevices, nooks and crannies that form the islands. Their diet will vary and can include plant matter, fruits and insects.
