Nazaré is located on Portugal’s ‘Silver Coast’ between Porto and Lisbon and, as well as being a very special place to visit, is also a hotspot and primary destination for surfers, especially between October and March. To me, this wave, which I’m told is just a moderate one, looks amazing and the guy in front of it, as well as being especially brave, must also be a little nuts! These great waves here are at their peak between December and February and are a natural phenomenon caused by a unique underwater topography which includes a 5000m deep canyon. When combined with the strong Atlantic winter winds, these offshore features amplify the swells as they roll in, often creating waves of over 30 metres. By then end of the day however, it is much more relaxing to sit and watch the sunset around 4 or 5 km away out on the horizon across the Atlantic Ocean (below).
