Once again the Steller’s sea eagle has been active around Newfoundland this past spring and summer. Over last winter he was thought to have travelled maybe as far as New Brunswick, but by early spring he was once again sighted back on Newfoundland. This year I’ve managed to get out four times to try and find him and on three occasions I did get confirmed sightings, but it wasn’t until my last trip in early September that I got any shots I was really happy with. Photographs aside though, each trip was a treat (see also A Very Special Treat) and a privilege. Many people have travelled from far and wide for no other reason than to see this eagle at least once in their lives and unfortunately for some of them, they didn’t even manage that, but they were heard saying ‘they’d be back, if he’s back, next year’. So, although he’s over 8,000km from home this bird is certainly helping to boost the local tourism economy! A new batch of SSE images can be seen in the Eagles Gallery, including some inflight shots.
