I’ve seen eagles with many a different and sometimes surprising food source including other birds, very large fish and even octopus, but this was a first and a surprise when we spotted this guy with a crab. I don’t think the crab was still alive, but had it been, this eagle would have had to be very careful with its catch – those front pincers of the crab would easily do some damage to the bird’s eye if the crab caught it. As for the crab? Well, it is a Dungeness Crab (Cancer magister), a Pacific species of crab that is a much loved food source along the BC coast and I’m told (I don’t eat crab) that it is very tasty, so I guess the eagle knows a good thing when it sees one!
