Whilst on my recent trip back to the Khutzeymateen in BC, as well as a few new bears, I also had hopes of seeing one or two of the old regulars, but seeing this old girl was a real surprise. Big Momma has featured here many times over the years, along with several of her offspring – but I really did not expect to see her this time around. I was even more shocked and pleased when I learnt that she had just weaned another cub earlier this spring and he will feature here at a later date. We estimate Momma must now be around 27 or 28 years old and with her latest cub must have had at least six if not seven sets of cubs, that is pretty amazing for a grizzly bear in the wild.
