Today’s Friday Flashback is from 12th June 2017 and is entitled ‘White Faced Black Bear‘. 2017 was a crazy year for seeing black bears in the Khutzeymateen, I’d never seen any in there before then (or since), but was lucky enough to see several that year, including a couple of good encounters.
Original Text: “I’m just home from my first foray in to the Khutzeymateen for this year. It was an exceptional few weeks with many sightings and several ‘old favourites’ back – but this picture is a ‘first’ for me in there. I’d never seen a black bear in the Khutzeymateen before and was doubly surprised when we came across this young bear early on our second morning. I had hoped I might get to see a black bear this year with it being so early in the season and very few grizzlies around, so I was pleased when I did, but I was not only surprised by seeing this bear, but also by it’s appearance. I had not seen a black bear with such a white face before and when we came around the corner in to a small cove he just stared at us for a few seconds as if in trouble, then disappeared in to the bush. We have not seen him since this chance encounter, but I sure was glad I did get to see him no matter how briefly. Lot’s more from the ‘awakening of the Khutzeymateen’ to come.“
