The Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus)can be found across many parts of Africa, through central to Eastern Asia and in parts of Western Europe. At around 38cm it is considered a small kite that is similar in size to falcons such as the kestrel and despite its dark wings, received its name due to the black coverts at the top of the wing or shoulders. I was fortunate to come across three or four of these distinctive birds whilst in Tanzania and, as seen here, I was always amazed how they managed to perch so carefully amongst the long spikes of the Acacias. There is also a similar looking ‘black-shouldered’ kite to be found in Australia, often conveniently prefixed ‘Australian’ in the name, especially outside of the country.
