Did you know today is ‘World Lizard Day’? No, neither did I, at least not until I started doing some research on the Mwanza flat-headed rock agama lizard (Agama mwanzae) featured here. Lizards are dying out worldwide, primarily due to lack of attention, poaching and habitat loss and included under the term ‘lizard’ are reptiles in general such as snakes, iguanas, crocodiles and tortoises. So I guess today should really be known as ‘world reptile day’, but it isn’t. Most lizards, including our friend the agama here, love to sun themselves and can often be spotted stretched out over a rock or along a branch in the sun. The day was primarily established by pet and reptile enthusiasts with the aim or raising awareness worldwide across the internet and to date the day has not been recognized by any formal conservation organization such as the World Wildlife Fund, but you never know, maybe one day, because especially in the wild, they do need all the help they can get!
