Anytime now all around the Newfoundland coast a very special annual event is about to occur – the seasonal arrival of the ‘Capelin’ (Mallotus villosus). This tiny fish comes into shore to ‘roll’ up on the beaches and lay its eggs. We’ll do more about this keystone species in the future, but with the arrival of this fish comes many other visitors too – cod, whales, various seabirds and of course eagles to name but a few. I spotted this guy perched up on an old power pole behind my house on Monday evening, just watching the ocean down below and occasionally doing a flyby before returning to his observation post.
