Navigating The Woodpile

A bear’s environment can change and after winter hibernation bears can find that their natural playground has changed drastically when they return – often through landslides and fallen trees. Back in 2018 I spotted an injured male bear who may well have suffered a bad fall from a collapsed landslide such as this, but luckily he was doing ok when I saw him again a few years later, see Resilience. This young female grizzly is navigating her way over one such landslide that she’s come across in early spring in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary. Bears have learnt to be careful for they know that such debris as this could prove to be fatal should there be any movement or collapse beneath the pile they are climbing over. Fortunately she was ok on this occasion and she managed to pass by quite safely.
