This is a shot of a female yellow-shafted northern flicker that I photographed earlier this morning. This was her trying to warm up in the early morning sun after a night that saw temperatures plummet to minus 20ºC. I just love how her feathers are all fluffed out like a big winter coat, making her head look small in comparison tucked down into the shoulders.
