
Back in the spring I had a couple of visits with a nearby red fox family and managed to get a few shots of dad (see Tricoloured Fox) and two of the three known kits (see Inquisitive Fox Kit 2) that were at the den. Today we have a shot of mom, who, as can be seen here, would often sit a short distance from the den keeping a motherly eye over the area from a small mound which would have given her a good view. This probably served two or three purposes – it would have enabled her a short respite from the ever demanding kits, given her a place of safety to watch for intruders and also a retreat option if something catastrophic was to happen at the den. She sure was a beautiful fox and from what I was told by other observers of the site, it is at least the second year her and the same male have have used this location.
