The Bananaquit (Coereba flaveola) is a member of the ‘tanager’ family of birds that is found throughout the Caribbean and parts of South America. This colourful bird is very similar in appearance to the ‘Great Kiskadee‘, but one easy distinguishing feature is the reddish gape at the base of the bill. Colloquially, this bird is sometimes known as the ‘sugar bird’ due to its fondness of all things sweet. It feeds on nectar and fruit and is not shy about visiting nectar feeders if they are left out and it has been reported by some, that they will even eat sugar out of a bowl!
