I’ve featured ‘Dark-eyed Junco’s’ before, but they were very much West coast variants with their strong black heads, brown backs and white chests. These shots are of the ‘Slate-coloured’ variant of Dark-eyed Junco found on the east coast of Canada in Newfoundland. One of the most common birds across North America, juncos come in several colour or regional variants, but the one thing they all seem to have in common is that pink bill. In general, the female of all variants is slightly paler than the male, as seen below. Sometimes you may only get a glimpse of this bird as it flies up from the ground, but the distinctive ‘alarm’ flash of a white line of feathers within the tail will give them away.
