Dot-lined Angle Moth

Here is a red/orange variant of the Dot-lined Angle Moth (Psamatodes abydata, (aka Macaria abydata)). These small (2-3cm) moths are fairly common now worldwide and several ‘varieties’ or colour phases can be found. Having been ‘introduced’ to the Hawaiian Islands in the 1970’s, I came across this one in Maui – they originated from South America, the Caribbean and the Southern US states. The ‘dot-lined’ element of the name refers to the line of dots found on the front and rear wings and some varieties can just have small dots, whilst some, as seen here, have the clearly visible three solid dot markings on each side and some can have a combination of both.
