Friday Flashback – Urgh, Gross!

Today’s Friday Flashback is from May 23rd, 2014 and is entitled ‘Urgh, Gross!‘. Whilst looking pretty much inedible for us, today’s shot helps remind us that nothing goes to waste in the Great Bear Rainforest, not even the decaying dead salmon, enjoy!

Original text – ‘The title of this post was my wife’s expression when I first showed her this shot and I guess it seemed apt and was certainly the only printable one! This American Marten (Martes americana) certainly had to work hard for his supper. He had to drag this rotting chum salmon carcass from a pool of putrefying maggot infested dead salmon and haul it to the tree line before a piece broke off for it to eat. Having had a few scraps from the chum it left if in situ to help feed the rest of the forest and no doubt if he enjoyed it, the marten probably returned later for more! You can see more marten (and better looking salmon) in the Land & fresh water gallery
