It’s been a very long time since we featured a Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) and since I learned something new about natures ‘street cleaners’ recently I thought I’d pass it along. As mentioned in the previous post back in 2013 these birds with their acute sense of smell can detect any dead critter whilst circling from high above and with exceptionally strong stomach acids they will eat any rotting carcass they can crunch their way through no matter how bad it smells or looks. But after spending a considerable amount of time eating, often stood on their food in the process, there is always a good possibility they could transfer disease from one place to the next as they go. To protect themselves and as a form of natural germ control, they have their own unique ‘foot’ sanitizer which they use before leaving the site. What they do is they urinate on their feet and strong acids and the chemical makeup in their pee kills any bacteria on the claws before they fly off!
