Looking Cool

Here we see a little yearling cub trying his best to ‘look cool’ with a wisp of Lyngby’s Sedge hanging from his mouth. Lyngby’s Sedge (Carex lyngbyei) is a staple diet for coastal bears in the spring and is full of good nutrition for them. By mid-July however, it has pretty much lost all of its nutritional value and becomes quite tough and is more raspy and cellulose like. The outer layer resembles a fine-grain sandpaper and can wear down the enamel of a bear’s teeth, leading to tooth decay and occasionally fatal problems in the future. This is the little guy that featured in the favourite shot ‘Thanks Mum’ and this was him a year after that shot was taken.
