Jaws

Here’s a grizzly bear we used to see at a coastal fishing hole quite regularly and who became affectionately known as ‘Jaws’. As you can see from this shot, his lower gum line around his jaw is ripped and hanging loose. Probably the result of a fight or quarrel with some other bear, the injury, although looking sore, did appear healed and he didn’t seem too bothered by it. I saw him show up like this for the two or three years that I visited that particular area and although he would sometimes appear thin and malnourished when he arrived, he would fatten up quite quickly once he got into the salmon and clearly did well enough to get through the winter.
