Maui Visitors

Visiting Maui in the near future? If so, you’re in for a treat – these big guys, the humpback whales have just started returning for their ‘fun in the sun’. Researchers at the Pacific Whale Foundation spotted their first returning humpback last Friday and over the next few months many more will return. The humpbacks visit the warm tropical waters of Maui only for a short time, but during their visit they will have a busy time of it before heading back to cooler waters. Mom’s will part company with their year old calves and pregnant females will give birth, whilst unattached adult males and females will be pairing up for mating, (see also Singing Humpbacks). They only stick around in the warm waters for about six weeks or so then head north again, but they don’t all arrive and leave at the same time, it’s a steady trickle in both directions. So if you’re in the area it’s well worth a trip out to see them.
