Mid to late June is often an exciting and yet worrying time of year in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary on the northern BC coast. It’s exciting because this is the time the moms with the new cubs start to show up in and around the estuary and inlet, but it is also a worrying time too as the adult males are still around and mating season has not necessarily quite finished for all the bears. Seeing the cubs down on the estuary is a joy to behold as they run around in excitement and wonderment exploring and learning all about their new environment and what to find in it from their mom. But whilst mom is always alert and watching for danger, the cubs do not always have such a keen instinct and have to learn fast if an uninvited male shows up.
