I was surprised when I spotted these two young male Columbian black-tailed deer hanging out on a remote beach here on Vancouver Island one day. I was even more surprised that they looked and behaved inquisitive at our boat slowing down to observe them, rather than running off – which is the norm. Nevertheless, it was great to watch them for a short while and grab a few shots before we carried on our way and left them to forage along the shore. These guys would have been looking for new plant growth, their favourite food on the forest edge, but they are not averse to the odd nut, shrub, fungi or berry and of course grass and sedge should they be available.
