Fairy Slipper

I first came across one of these eleven or twelve years ago and although considered fairly common and despite numerous efforts to find some, I have only found them on two other occasions since, including this one, which I got to see a couple of weeks ago. The Fairy Slipper (Calypso bulbosa) is a forest orchid found across Canada and North America. It can go by a number of colloquial names such as Venus slipper, Angel Slipper, Deer’s Head Orchid and False Ladyslipper to name but a few – but they all refer primarily to the same Calypso Orchid or this one, it’s pink and white-lipped sub-variety, ‘occidentalis’ which is the more common variety here on the BC coast.
