A Santa Story

The Fly Agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria) known as a ‘psychoactive’ mushroom that used to be used in some form ritualistically throughout Europe and Asia. It is thought to have entered North America via Alaska and today is found across most of the continent. Back in Europe, this dangerous mushroom is a favourite food source of reindeer and once of the Sami people that inhabit the same Arctic areas. It is considered that this mushroom’s hallucinogenic properties (I do not recommend you try them!) might in fact be the ‘creator’ of the Father Christmas (Santa Claus) fable and the ability of his reindeer to fly! See this short video from the BBC – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkCS9ePWuLU to learn more. Merry Christmas!
