Quite often it can take us a long time to identify if a cub is a male or a female, it can take many hours of watching them before you know for sure. Only this year for example, a recently weaned cub now in its third season, one that we were sure was a male, one afternoon stood up from sleeping and took a pee, backwards! This event identified once and for all that the bear was in fact a female and not a male as had first been thought. However, with the little cub of the year seen here, just a day or two after coming down to the coast for the first time, he rolled over on his back, waved his paw in the air and left us without any doubt – he’s a boy!
