I’ve seen bald eagles eating many things along the shores of the BC coast, but I was not expecting an octopus to be on the diet the day I came across this scene. Originally I was attracted closer to the shore to see what a juvenile eagle was eating and was totally surprised what was on the menu – how he got it I do not know, but probably killed by a seal and washed up on the beach on the dropping tide. After a while, the younger bird was chased away by this adult who decided it was his turn to come down and enjoy a little sea food whilst the going was good. This eagle looked in really good shape and he certainly enjoyed the octopus and was still eating away when I had to leave.
