Today’s Friday Flashback is from June 28th 2013 entitled ‘One Good Tern…’ – A seabird we do not see too often – making it a nice surprise when we do!
Original text – “When I was out on one of the grizzly bear photo tours last week, I heard a sound I hadn’t heard for quite some time and looking round was rewarded by the sight of a Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia), but not one, two! Initially I looked in to the sky when I heard the call, but was surprised to find the two of them perched together on a nearby rock amongst a squabble of Bonaparte’s Gulls (Chroicocephalus philadelphia). Caspian Terns are migratory birds to the Southern BC coast, where they visit at this time of year to nest. One of the reasons for my surprise is that it was a lot further north than their summer range would normally suggest, but this is now the second time I have seen these terns in this particular location and they are always a pleasure to see.”
