A sub-adult grizzly bear looks up and appears to smile – clearly enjoying the start of another brand new day in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary here on the BC coast. As for females with cubs, early days out of hibernation in May and through to late June can also be an exceptionally dangerous time for these young bears, especially males such as this guy. The big adult males are on the prowl and will often show up in areas they are not seen at any other time of the year. If a large male, especially a dominant male, gets the drop on these young guys they could be toast – although most of them are quite fleet-footed and can usually make it to the bush a lot quicker than the cumbersome, lumbering adults.
