Northern Pintails

Another shot from the Khutzeymateen, but this time showing some visitors to the area that were just ‘passing through’ – these are Northern Pintail ducks (Anas acuta) and they had stopped off overnight during their migration north last spring. Northern pintails are a large duck, with the males having long pointed tails. They mostly winter to the south of the Khutzeymateen along the southern BC coast and beyond to South America. Come early spring and many will head off eastwards or northerly to the arctic to breed and raise their young, whilst some will stay year round on outer BC coast areas such as Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii.
