A male grizzly bear of the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary here on the BC coast, looks up from the water after a fruitless search for salmon in the Khutzeymateen river. His expression seems to say it all – ‘I can’t believe there’s no salmon!’ I was fortunate to watch this guy for a little while one day last fall and his salmon search wasn’t barren for long, although he did have to make do with scavenging a few chum carcasses more than catching live pink salmon on this particular day.
