And The National Bird Is…

A little over a year ago I posted a blog about the national bird of Canada debate, to let people know of the on going mission by the Royal Canadian Geographic Society to have a national bird announced by 2017 for Canada’s sesquicentennial. Well, the results are in and with over 50,000 votes registered, a bit of a surprise seems to have won through to champion the cause for Canada’s birds. It still needs government designation in order to don it’s ‘National Bird’ crown, but with the Environment Minister, Catherine McKenna presiding over the proceedings, it is hoped this will soon be granted. And the winner is… the Gray Jay. Surprised? Yes, many thought (including myself) that the Canada Goose would win the title, but one thing pointed out, during a no doubt heated debate, the Canada goose flies south for the winter, but the Jay toughs it out and stays all year round. A vote winning fact maybe. More information can be found here: – The National Bird Project.
