Standing in about a metre of water eating sedge on the edge of the estuary, this is one of the older females of the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary on the BC coast. She recently and late in the season weaned her latest cub, thought to be a young male who was very wisely keeping a low profile. During my entire week in there I only came across him once – late in the day, one evening as we were heading back to the boat. ‘Big Momma’, she’s thought to be about 16 years old now, one of the older ‘regulars, has had three sets of cubs and hopefully next year will return with her fourth.
