Henceforth, for as long as necessary, this week should be known as ‘Stop the Hunt‘ week! Barely out of hibernation, some may not even be out of hibernation yet, but on Wednesday the government sponsored trophy hunting of bears in British Columbia once again starts in earnest. Despite a purported number, in the region of 90 percent, of British Columbians being against the trophy hunting of grizzly bears, the government allows it to continue – in fact they have widened it and reopened long closed areas to trophy hunting last year and this year they are giving even greater hunting access to non BC residents. It’s not just the government of course, it is also those that work for them. It recently came to light that in emails released under the FOI act that so called public servants highlighted the fact that by opening a new area up for a trophy hunt must mean there are a certain number of grizzlies in the area, so therefore the Federal Government’s opposition to mining in the same area because of low bear numbers must be null an void or else there wouldn’t be a trophy hunt. Mmmmm…. go figure!
Please spare a thought for BC’s bears over the next six weeks or so.
