A couple of friends and I arrived at this creek just as it was getting light one morning last fall. The first thing I noticed was the headless salmon carcass lying on a gravel bar in the middle of the water and I could tell instantly that it was the remains of a recent wolf kill – I wondered how long it would last. Like the salmon carcass, my wonderment did not last very long. This sub-adult grizzly arrived on the creek shortly after we did and found the crimson coloured salmon carcass pretty quickly. Keeping a close eye on it’s sibling it headed off to the bushes (below) with some tasty sockeye leftovers for breakfast.
