A year round resident, this Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) was photographed here on the BC coast. At this time of year, they can be difficult to spot but are most often heard – the males pace up & down on a fallen log and beat their curved wings on the air, creating a throbbing or thumping sound which builds and builds to a crescendo, using the sound to hopefully attract a mate. If he sounds good a female will approach and check out the candidate and if he looks as good as he sounds she will allow him to mate.
