Maybe I should have called this post ‘Bear Food 3’ as for each of the last two years around this time I’ve posted a food that is a particular favourite of bears here on the BC coast. The Chocolate Lilly (Fritillaria lanceolata) is certainly a firm favourite with bears – especially the grizzly bears of the Khutzeymateen, the location of this shot – although not because it tastes of chocolate like its name suggests. It is the bulbs they like to eat – these also used to be eaten by some coastal First Nations and apparently when boiled or steamed they taste like bitter rice, but of course, the bears just eat them raw!
