Here is a young bull elk in Jasper National Park, Alberta getting ready to let forth a bugle call for any nearby females to come and join him – note how his upper lip curls around up to his nose. He had been successful with at least one call for a mate as nearby he had one female in tow with him. He still had a long way to go to match up with the first elk I encountered though, (see rocky mountain elk) who was not only taller and stockier, but also had more points on his antlers and several females tagging along with him.
