Black Footed Albatross

Black-Footed-Albatross

Here is one for the sea-bird lovers out there, the Black Footed Albatross (Phoebastria nigripes) not usually seen inshore on the BC coast, but is found in open water offshore and this one was seen north of Vancouver Island in Queen Charlotte Sound.  These are the most commonly seen albatross along the Pacific seaboard and although mostly sooty and dark all over, with a white face ring where it meets the bill, a lighter morph, such as this can also be spotted on occasion.  As with most albatross, these birds are quite large with an exceptionally long wingspan up to around 2 metres.
